Yes - I just finished Eat, Pray, Love...

I want to go on a retreat.  A silent retreat.  I want to not speak, and not be spoken to, for many many days in a row.  I need to find a retreat that is free, including room and board, that provides (also free) 24 hour childcare far away (or at least not within earshot), and also somehow involves toning the abs.  Know of anything?

Manze Dayila And Other Stories

Manze Dayila Whenever I hear a story like the one I heard today on PRI’s The World about Manze Dayila, I always want to hear the parts they leave out.

Manze Dayila’s life has been extraordinary:  Pregnant woman, 19 years old, boards a boat from Haiti along with other refugees, gets waylaid and hospitalized in Cuba, fights the Cuban doctors to re-board the broken-down boat, continues on to the US, and 6 days after washing up on Miami’s shores gives birth to a baby

Canary In A Coal Mine

I have a friend who, a few weeks ago, became the first person we know to succumb to the current financial crisis.  Yes yes - we've all felt the heat, and we're all tightening our belts, but hers is the first family I know who has lost it all.  She calls herself our own personal Canary In A Coal Mine.

The truth is that she provides a substantial and dependable second income for her family.   3. They bought a house in Los Angeles in 2004.

Everything started falling apart about a month ago.  The stock market, as we all know, has been going wanky (that’s a technical term), prompting my friend to quit day-trading for a while.  It just wasn’t working anymore.  This was a blow to her personally, as well as to their bottom line.  A week later her husband lost

Web Design and Mole Removal and Engine Repairs! Oh My!

I'm a "Do-It-Yourself" kind of guy. When the washing machine breaks I'd rather spend hours Googling the problem, discovering how to fix it and ordering the parts from some website instead of spending an hour of someone else's time and $100. At the end of the process I always end up saying the same thing, "Well that was stupid! Next time I'll spend the money." At least now I know how to repair a washing machine, a microwave, computer, speakers, (not a printer -- I ruined that), various NON-ENGINE related parts of cars, etc. When I went to the dermatologist and had a mole removed, I swear the thought crossed my mind, "That doesn't look so difficult, I bet I could

What the Hell Are We Thinking?

I was lying in bed this morning, well after the alarm had gone off. The radio was set to NPR and Marketplace Morning Report came on. Of course it's yet another story on the terrible economy.  How could it possibly be anything else?  Renita Jablonski was
