Black Pudding and Tea -- £4
We grabbed lunch in a tiny, grungy old dive in Dundee called The New Popular Restaurant yesterday. 5 tables total, waitresses in hair nets, awesomeness! The menu had exactly this: White Pudding, Red Pudding, Black Pudding, Fishcakes, Deep-fried Sausages, or Deep-fried Pizza, all served with chips and a cup of tea. £4 each, tea included.
I asked our waitress to explain the differences in the puddings, and she sat right down at the table to do it. When she called over to the line cook about what exactly was in the Black Pudding he grinned and said that I'd have to try it before he told me. So I did. When doused with lots of vinegar, and while thinking furiously about something other than what you might be eating, it's not very bad. Not really. Also - you shouldn't really breath in vigorously through your nose. And don't be stingy with the vinegar.
He never did tell me what was in it.

Oh Bren...I don't know what to say...except I wish you had text me...
You are a brave soul. When someone tells me I have to try something before they'll tell me what's in it, the information is not something worth knowing. I'm sure I would lose lots of weight being on a trip like yours. You just caused me to baby barf.
Mara says that would be blood.
yup...blood.
What, no haggis?
sounds scary to me. You are all brave even going on this trip. Food thats a whole 'nother thing.....
Eating food from other cultures is one of the coolest things imaginable. Stretch your horizons and live!!! Don't eat the grilled cheese sandwich, go for the adventure every time. You will not regret it.
It's a - nice day for a - Black Puddin...g. I remember that song.
ps Keep the posts coming. My heart skips a beat when one arrives in my inbox.
Here's everything you ever wanted to know about Black Pudding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pudding
Depending on how it's prepared, it can be pretty tasty. In Germany this is most often eaten on bread, I believe. I've only had it a few times... If it ever strikes you as something you want to 'revisit' once you're back, I think you can get it at Schreiner's in Glendale, but not sure... They wouldn't call it Black Pudding, though...
;-)
Sounds fantastic, I grew up eating black pudding (it was always served with bacon and eggs...don't ask me why...) so I'm getting nostalgic. We even knew what it was as kids and ate it anyway...not sure what this says about us...I am curious about the white and red puddings, I have never heard of either.
I believe there is an english-style pub on Burbank Blvd. that serves black pudding, but I'm sure it isn't as good as the real thing in the real place! I think the Chinese really take the cake on unmentionable ingredients in their food. (Speakin' from experience here...)
Yep, it is blood pudding. I would have to have about a gallon of vinager, a very large clothes pin for my nose, and splinters under my fingernails to try blood pudding. You are very brave........bet Owen didn't eat it. If you are tempted to eat haggis look it up and find out what it has in it. UGH..........but some people think that fried catfish is disgusting. To each culture his own. I bet the tea is awsome and that Bob is in heaven.
Love to all..........................mom
Hey Mom,
Tried the Haggis already. It's quite good actually. Rumor has it that they don't cook it in a sheep's stomach anymore. Something to do with foot and mouth disease. Don't quote me - it's just what the waitress said. So - thumbs up for Haggis, thumbs down for black pudding.
Bob thinks fried catfish is disgusting. I married him anyway. Damn Yankee!
