The Suitcase Knows the Way

Bob Redpath in luggage

I ponder a lot. I ponder where a worn dollar bill (or Euro or Zloty now) has been before I receive it from the cashier and where it goes after I spend it. I ponder where the clothes that I give to Goodwill will end up. And some moments I ponder what in the hell we're doing -- but those moments pass quickly.

I bought one of our suitcases at the Goodwill Store before we left Los Angeles, and inside I found the name of the previous owner on the luggage tag (and 40 cents.) I wondered who Robin Robb was and where she'd been with my new suitcase. In borderline stalker fashion I tracked her down (in about 30 seconds) on Google and found that she is a photographer. I emailed her last week to ask if it would be okay to post this blog and she replied with this, "Glad to know you got my suitcase and it will be in good hands. That suitcase has been a lot of places. Ireland, England, New York, Chicago, Arizona, Florida, Texas, Mexico and Canada. Maybe a few other places as well, can't recall all of them now."

How cool -- our suitcase has been to places that we haven't yet. Maybe if we get lost we can ask it the way.
